Meet one-year-old Kai, our August birthday kid of the month! Hear more from his mom, Caitlyn, about their party plans, what Kai is loving right now, and what parenthood has taught Caitlyn as Kai grows.
How are you celebrating his birthday? Did you have a theme? What inspired it?
We’re celebrating Kai’s first birthday with a surfing/beach-themed party! 🌊🏄♂️ I wanted something that felt fun and carefree and really represented him. I love the ocean and sharks, and I wanted his first birthday to have that same happy, beachy feeling. It’s hard to believe we’re already celebrating one whole year with him!
What is your favorite part of this age?
My favorite part is watching his little personality come out more and more every day. He’s becoming his own little person, and I love watching him learn, explore, and figure things out. There are so many firsts at this age, and getting to experience them with him is something I’ll always treasure.
What are his current interests or favorite things?
Right now, Kai loves being outside, exploring everything around him, and keeping me on my toes! He loves to play, get into things he probably shouldn’t, and he is happiest when he’s moving and discovering something new. He also absolutely loves the water, which makes his surfing-themed birthday feel even more perfect. 🌊
How would you describe their personality?
Kai is such a happy, curious, and independent little boy. He has a big personality for such a little person! He’s very observant and wants to know what everyone is doing, but he also definitely has a little bit of a mischievous side. He keeps me laughing and makes every day more fun.
What makes them laugh the hardest?
Honestly, being silly with him. Making funny faces, playing little games, and doing things he doesn’t expect can get the biggest laughs out of him. His laugh is one of my absolute favorite sounds in the world, and I’ll do just about anything to hear it.
What is a habit or quirk that you never want to forget?
I never want to forget all of his little mannerisms—the faces he makes, the way he gets excited about something, and those random little things he does that only I would notice. I especially want to remember his laugh and the way his whole face lights up when he’s happy. I know those tiny everyday moments are the things I’ll miss the most someday.
What has parenthood taught you?
Parenthood has taught me that life can change in ways you never expected, and somehow become more beautiful because of it. It has taught me patience, strength, and how much love one little person can bring into your life. Being Kai’s mom has made me want to slow down and appreciate the little moments because they really do go by so quickly. This first year has taught me that I don’t have to be a perfect mom—I just have to love him, show up for him, and do my best every day.
What is some of your best parenting advice?
Give yourself grace. You don’t have to have everything figured out, and what works for one child or one family might not work for another. Trust yourself, soak up the little moments, take way too many pictures and videos, and don’t wish away the hard stages because they really do go by faster than you think. Most importantly, enjoy your baby. The dishes can wait, the laundry can wait—sometimes you just need to sit on the floor and play with them. ❤️
