Print: Cake My Day

Q: Emma, can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

I am a freelance illustrator and a new mum living in London. I have been illustrating full-time since I left university 10 years ago having studied illustration. I create illustrations for book covers, children’s books, magazines, greetings cards, packaging and products, and I’ve also written several bestselling books on painting with watercolours and gouache.

Q: What about your source of inspiration as an artist? 

I am very inspired by everyday life, I love people watching. I also love to travel; I haven’t been able to do a lot recently, but even a trip to visit my parents in the countryside is full of inspiration. I am always on the lookout for beautiful colour combinations and patterns occurring naturally in everyday life.

Q: What was your inspiration for this Cake My Day print?

This print was inspired by my love of the Great British Bake Off/Great British Baking Show. I’ve always loved seeing all the interesting cakes and bakes they make, particularly during the technical bake, which inspired me to create this alphabet of cakes.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about your design process?

I love working in a sketchbook to record ideas, normally sketching in coloured pencils first then adding gouache. These days with a seven month old baby I don’t have as much time to sketch as I would like, but I often take quick photos of things I would like to paint at a later date. I also love working on an iPad using procreate. I have found it so useful since having a baby, I can just grab my iPad and do a little bit of sketching without having to actually go to my desk and get the paints out.

Q: How does it make you feel to know this print is out existing as living art in the world? What feelings or emotions do you hope this print evokes? 

It is such a wonderful feeling. One of the very best things about being an artist is seeing your paintings and drawings transformed into objects that people love and use every day.

I think this is a print that invokes a lot of joy. Cake makes people happy and there is something lovely and whimsical about an entire alphabet of cake.

Q: Tell us a bit more about yourself – some fun facts, perhaps? 

I’ve been working professionally as an illustrator since I was 17. I also come from a long line of antiques dealers and love going to thrift shops and vintage shops. As a kid, I was a really adventurous and loved scuba-diving and going on motorbike road trips with my dad.
